Social Responsibility & Sustainability Initiatives

Facebook -  Students in today's culture are well connected...So here at Tusculum Dining we decided to create a Facebook profile called TC Dinning and a group called "Live for Tomorrow TC", in order to connect better with students and get a more accurate feeling for what theTC Community is looking for in their on campus dining.

Go Green -  "Tusculumt Goes Green" mugs are being distributed for those individuals who dedicate/pledge to use the mug for refills of coffee and soda.  Although a small step, this encourages the use of reusable cups instead of dumping tons of paper and plastic products into our environment.

Second Harvest Food Bank -  Recently, Sodexo sponsored a national canned food drive "Cans Across America".  Tusculum College  collected and donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of Gray, TN.

Recycling - In a simple effort to help better our Dining Hall we have switched to recycled napkins instead of the white, bleached napkins that are detrimental to our environment.

Organic Night -  During the following Spring 2008 semester, the Dining Hall will be showcasing "Organic Night"  We will demonstrate healthy, creative and organic food at "Expo Station."

Biodesiel-  We have teamed up with Synergy Biofuels to donate our used cooking oil to aid in biodiesel efforts.  Our goal is to donate 12 gallons per week for efforts to curb emissions and exhaust.

Sodexo is committed to improving the quality of daily life for people, whenever and wherever they come together. To that end, Sodexo was one of the first contract food service companies to partner with Food Alliance. This non-profit organization promotes sustainable agriculture by recognizing and rewarding farmers who produce food in environmentally friendly and socially responsible ways. Together, Sodexo and Food Alliance take responsibility for educating our customers and others in the food system about the benefits of sustainable agriculture.

Every day, we make choices in the food we buy and the food we eat. This directly impacts our lives- not just what we eat, but the water we drink, the air we breathe and the health of our communities. Our Food Alliance guiding principles are:

  • Protecting and conserving water resources
  • Protecting and enhancing soil resources
  • Conserving and recycling nutrients
  • Reducing the environmental and health impacts of pesticides by practicing Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
  • Conserving and enhancing wildlife habitat
  • Providing safe and fair working conditions for our employees and our families
  • Producing Food Alliance certified crops without the use of genetically modified organisms (GMO's)
  • Provide healthy and humane care for livestock
  • Continually improving farming/ranching practices
Food Alliance Logo
Sodexo is committed to social responsibility, especially those surrounding our food supply. Everyday we make food choices. And, whenever possible, we will select foods that meet or exceed the standards set forth with the Food Alliance. So, be sure to look for the Food Alliance seal. It's better for you; better for the environment and better for our farmers. Please help us to improve the quality of daily life for the communities we serve. How You Can Help
You can help us help the environment in a number of ways:

  1. Take only the number of napkins you need per meal.
  2. Take only one cup for each beverage purchase.
  3. Use paper bags for carryout, where provided.
  4. Join our Recycle Mug Program or bring your own mug from home for beverage purchases.
  5. Recycle aluminum cans throughout campus at the designated recycling stations as well as at home.
  6. Dine in rather than carrying out.
  7. Get involved with your school and the Food Service Recycling Program.
